What is carbon block? This question is often asked in association with water filters. The reason it is asked is simple: for centuries people have known that carbon is an excellent media for absorbing the impurities found in water. In fact, carbon is so absorbent that one pound of it has a surface area of nearly 125 acres. It can absorb thousands of various chemicals and minerals found in water, and it is inexpensive.

When people ask, what is carbon block, they are usually searching for affordable ways to clean their drinking water. When they discover how powerful a carbon block water filter is, they usually stop searching.

A carbon block water filter normally contains activated carbon. This is carbon that has had a small electro-positive charge added to it. This charge makes the carbon more attractive to chemicals and other impurities found in water. It works in a simple manner. When the water passes through and over the positively charged surface, the negative ions found in the contaminants are pulled to the surface of the block carbon where they are trapped and later removed.

Home water filters can use either granular activated carbon (GAC) or powdered block carbon. Both of these are very effective at removing contaminants, but carbon block filters have a higher contaminant removal ratio.

It is important to keep in mind that the two most important factors concerning activated carbon filtration units are the amount of carbon that is contained within the unit, and the amount of time the water contaminant stays in contact with the carbon block.

As you might imagine, the larger the carbon block, the more efficient it will be in removing contaminants. Also, the longer the water remains in contact with the carbon block, the more contaminate that will be removed. For granular carbon water filters, the larger the particles, the better.

For consumers interested in activated carbon block filters, keep in mind they are normally rated by the size of the particles that they can remove from the water. This is measured in microns and it will normally range from 50 microns (which is the least effective), down to 0.5 microns (which is the most effective) at removing contaminants from water.

As is the case with all high-quality water filters, carbon block water filters require periodic changing of the filter media. The interval between media changes will depend on the size of the filter media itself as well as the condition of the incoming water.

So, what is carbon block? When it comes to water filters it is one of the most effective ways to filter water either as a primary filter or as a pre-filtering system for whole-house systems. While inexpensive and easy to use, they do, however, require some maintenance, most of which is ensuring the filter media is changed according to schedule.
