Is arsenic removal important for safe drinking water? Believe it or not, arsenic can be found in some drinking water sources. It enters the water source via runoff from industry or through natural deposits found in the earth itself. We all know it is a poison if enough of it is ingested, but the amounts found in water are normally far less than that needed to cause death or even serious illness. Still, no one wants arsenic in their drinking water!

However, even at small amounts arsenic can cause some health problems. These include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, thickening and discoloration of the skin, intense stomach pain, numbness in the feet or hands, partial paralysis, and, in some cases, blindness. It has also been linked to various types of cancers in the bladder, kidney, prostate, lungs, liver, skin, and nasal passages. For this reason, the EPA has set a maximum standard for arsenic in drinking water at .010 parts per million. This level only applies to drinking water that comes from public water systems. Arsenic removal for water with higher levels is therefore mandatory.

While some water sources get arsenic from natural processes, most of the arsenic found in water comes from agricultural and industrial processes. Arsenic can enter the water source if the source is close to virtually any type of lumber yard or wood processing factory. The arsenic seeps out of the treated wood and can “runoff” into the water source, thus contaminating it.

Arsenic is also found in many types of drugs, dyes, paints, as well as in electronic parts and semi-conductors. There are also many kinds of fertilizers that contain very high levels of arsenic. Any of the above can contaminate surface water sources as well as ground water sources.

Arsenic removal becomes more important depending on where you live. Research has already shown that some western states within US have public water systems with an arsenic level above .010 parts per million. This high level of arsenic can also be found in some New England states as well a few Midwest states.

The EPA requires public water systems to test for arsenic. This test is done on a routine basis and the results reported back to the EPA. Water systems that find high levels of arsenic must tell their customers within thirty days and they must also take measures to correct the problem immediately. Because the notification process is so lengthy, as we said they have thirty days to contact you, some consumers prefer to use water filters to remove arsenic at the home tap.
