You all know that pharmaceuticals are meant to promote health and well-being, but they can do just the opposite. In fact, recent studies have proved that various pharmaceuticals are present in your drinking water, which can jeopardize health. These new class of water contaminants and pollutants consist of drugs like antibiotics, anti-depressants, seizure medication, birth control pills, pain killers, cancer treatments, tranquilizers and cholesterol-lowering compounds. If the water contaminated with these traces of pharmaceuticals is consumed, then definitely it will cause more harm than good to the human body.
The fact that pharmaceuticals are present in drinking water came into notice some ten years ago in Europe when German environmental scientists found Clofibric Acid in ground water under a German water treatment plant. Soon more evidences that pharmaceuticals like phenazone, fenofibrate and analgesics such as ibuprofen and diclofenac are present in groundwater came out. In US, an Associated Press investigation shows that pharmaceuticals that include antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones are found in drinking water supplies of almost 41 million Americans.
The concentration of the drugs in the water might be low - however, the scientists are worried about the long-term consequences on human health.
What are the sources of pharmaceuticals contamination in underground water?
The pharmaceutical industries, hospitals and other medical facilities are the prime sources of pharmaceutical contaminants in ground water. In addition, the households are also a major contributor of the pharmaceuticals contamination in water through disposing of unused medicines by flushing them down the toilets. The human excreta may contain numerous incompletely metabolized medicines, which can pass through the sewage treatment facilities into the waterways and lakes.
The other sources of pharmaceutical contamination in underground water include farm animals through which various antibiotics and veterinary medicines enter the underground water. On the other hand, the manures that are spread on land contain pharmaceuticals that can percolate into groundwater. The personal care products are also a good contributor of pharmaceuticals in drinking water. These chemicals are active ingredients and preservatives that are found in cosmetics, toiletries or fragrances.
What are the effects of pharmaceuticals poisoning in drinking water?
Recent studies have found that the concentration of pharmaceuticals in water affects both human and wildlife enormously. Scientists are mainly worried about the long-term effects of pharmaceutical contamination. Many of these drugs may interfere with the hormone production of the human body.
Moreover, it will be a matter of concern if the antibiotics are released in drinking water as it might result in some of the very dangerous disease causing bacteria to become immune to treatment thereby resulting in excess of drug resistant diseases.
In addition, the fauna is not also spared form the threats of the pharmaceuticals in water. Presence of anti-depressants in water has been blamed for the altered sperm levels and spawning patterns from life in water.
What are the preventive measures?
Though there is no full proof way of purifying water. Charcoal filters are considered to be very effective for purification and can be used to filter both public and home drinking water.
