If you live in an old house, remember that you may have lead pipes that leach lead into your tap water; most water filters can remove this lead along with other contaminants. However, because the vast majority of water contaminants are microscopic, you may not even notice that your water is in need of filtering.

The water filters you’re considering likely vary in the types of contaminants they can effectively remove from your water supply. Be aware that some filters are actually too powerful, taking out natural trace minerals that are actually beneficial. For example, magnesium, potassium, and calcium exist in most residential water supplies, and these are essential for your wellbeing. De-mineralized water is not healthy. However, others, including heavy metals and chlorine, are observably detrimental to your health. For example, chlorine can irritate your skin if you shower in water contaminated by it. It may also cause asthma or other health problems. You should avoid bathing in, drinking, or cooking with contaminated water; many water contaminants carry unknown health risks and you should use water filters to remove them.

Water filters use a variety of filter types to remove everything from sand and other sediments to bacteria, parasites, fungi, heavy metals, silica, and other contaminants. The clean water flowing from a filter will smell, taste, and be much cleaner.

When choosing water filters, don’t forget to consider how you will take filtered water on the go. You can always use sports bottles to bottle your filtered water at home, but more portable solutions include a water filter pitcher, or a portable reverse osmosis filter. These can be very helpful for those who are in a college dorm room, staying in another city at a hotel, camping in the wilderness, or traveling abroad.
