Reverse osmosis is a very thorough method of treating your water. Through the reverse osmosis process, the water is filtered to remove lead, heavy metals, chemicals, chlorine, pesticides, bacteria, and other contaminants. It has even been used to make sea water safe to drink because it is so effective.

Although the reverse osmosis process was developed for use on very poor quality water, it is also very effective for using to filter the typical water supply coming into your home. Unlike other filter systems that are meant to be attached to a single faucet, many reverse osmosis systems can be plumbed into your main water line, delivering fresh and clear water to your entire house. Many people in rural areas use this treatment method to ensure access to clean water, but these systems are just as effective for treating the water in many cities. Some cities already use a reverse osmosis system to clean their drinking water, but if your water has any type of funny smell or taste, or if you want to be sure that the water is completely safe to drink, consider filtering it once it reaches your house.

Reverse osmosis filters are designed to remove bacteria and other biological contaminants, but many of these filtering systems combine this with other filters, effectively removing all of the contaminants likely to be found in your water supply. Reverse osmosis may be one of several stages needed to clean your water to remove all types of contaminants. While reverse osmosis removes salts and bacteria, other filters remove sediment, rust, lead and other metals, and other contaminants that may be found in your water.

During the reverse osmosis process, a semi-permeable membrane is used. This membrane only allows pure water to come through, leaving behind contaminants trapped by the membrane. Many such systems also include a UV light after the membrane to kill any bacteria or other contaminants that were small enough to pass through the membrane.

Reverse osmosis filters are currently used in many countries where the drinking water is of notoriously poor quality. The residents of many nations use these filters to convert ocean water into safe water for drinking, bathing, farming, or other uses. In these countries, reverse osmosis systems have saved many lives by preventing sicknesses related to drinking unsafe water. Because these filters are so thorough, they are a good choice for many applications. If you will be traveling abroad, or live in a rural area where the water you use is untreated, consider reverse osmosis.
